Originally ordered by Queen Victoria, court mounting is the process of having medals fastened to a hard backing so as not to allow them to swing freely (called swing mounted). This process helps preserve the medals from chipping, as well as keeping them silent (Her Royal Highness' original intention of the order).
Though many services have altered the layout, HMS stays true to the Commonwealth regulation as well as that set out by the Canadian Governor-General and specific unit regulations. The medals are mounted 5 across, with 6 or more allowing for overlap. The length is 4" of the medal. Order of precedence is always followed.
Royal Navy can choose to have medals begin overlap at 4 or more due to the high shoulder wearing common for the RN.
RCMP Medals are mounted as per the RCMP regulations.

Thin-Mount Medals
Instead of the thick and bulky backing used for court mounting, HMS can 'thin-mount' your medals on a strong, thin and light backing to reduce the weight and strain on the pins. Just ask for it.
